That “growing mushrooms” metaphor is spot on. Do you think we still have time to really figure out what these AI systems are thinking, especially now that they’ve started writing themselves?

My main worry is not really with the AIs, but the people making and using them. Could we build a safe AI? Probably. Humans, however, are mostly interested in their own personal benefit before anything else. That, I am afraid, will lead us to do stupid things for humanity as a whole.

Fair. Part of me wonders if the tools are outpacing our ethics, is it the humans we need to fix first or the incentives they respond to?

We needed to fix ourselves, but that was never really possible. It certainly isn't possible in the timeframe we have for AI. Now, we need to hope for the best and each do our part to ensure it comes to pass.

The next decade will be a wild ride for everyone.

Maybe the real challenge isn’t about fixing everything, but choosing not to look away. Even small acts of accountability matter more when the stakes are this high. I’m bracing for the ride, and I’m not doing it passively
